SOMA rolled on the road with 40 Berliner artist’s works
more than 10,000 kms in 50 days between the two continents.
The works are shown on the site whereever we found the best
place. SOMA’s Nomadic BLue Project was shown in Chefchaouen – Fez – Essaouria – Sidi Ifni – Dakhla. The project spots were varying from the stormy desert to on the roof a mosque.
Nomadic Exchange Project between the two continents is on-going, currently in develpoment process to be held in Dec. 2017 for 2 weeks in Morocco for further understanding between Europe and North Africa.

Just what does it mean to be spiritual and how do people experience and express spirituality?
For some people spirituality means one’s manner of being , some define it more behaviorally as a set of behavior repertoires that is formal and ceremonial, still for others, it is the fullest possible actualization of what a person is in her& his heart… wherein the totality of all the dimensions and capacities and contents of one’s life and soul are brought to conscious unity in realization.
SOMA presents San Jin and Atsuko Minami’s works which are deeply connected with the spirituality and their life time events and experience such as death and life, the consciousness of being a part of a nature and universe. The universe that is invisible yet, it is obviously there when one is open to it as a visible world. San Jin’s works are inspired by shamanic path whereas Atsuko Minami’s works are deeply connected with Kami – the spirits or phenomena that are worshiped in Shinto. In both of the Artists’ work spirituality is not separate from nature, but is of nature, possessing positive and negative, good and evil characteristics. They are the interconnecting energy of the universe, and are considered exemplary of what humanity should strive towards.

– Stephanie Sarley’s The Fruits of Art
SOMA is so happy to announce Stepahnie Sarley’s first international solo exbition for its first time in Berlin.
‘The Fruits of Art’ are serial video artworks of fruit being fingered and her instagram accounts which contains the contents have been disabled several times since last 3 years.
Her video is basically about personifying and empowering vaginas through humor and absurdity, and the acceptance of female sexuality at large.
Reisen? Unterwegssein, Abenteuerlust, Fremde, Begegnungen… Für Elke Werneburg als Künstlerin heißt Reisen auch: Finden! Nicht etwa Suchen, sondern Finden. Damit gemeint ist der offene, unabsichtliche, ergebnisoffene Blick in die Welt.
So kommt Werneburg zu vielen Fundstücken. Gemeinsam ist ihnen: In den Augen der Welt sind sie mehr oder weniger wertlos. Gemeinsam ist ihnen außerdem der Zauber, den sie entwickeln können unter einem offenen, empathischen, wachen Blick. Dann sind sie schön, berührend,
interessant, aufschlussreich: Bonbonpapier, Kronkorken, zur Unkennbarkeit zertretene Kunststoffteilchen, von der Zeit geschliffene Glas- oder Porzellanscherben, Stofffetzen, Steine, Plastikzeugs. Farbiges, Rundes, Schroffes, Glitzerndes, Rätselhaftes…
Im Kern geht es hier um ästhetische Erfahrung, die zu tun hat mit Wertschätzung: unvoreingenommene, unmittelbare, wertschätzende Aufmerksamkeit für das Hier und Jetzt. Aus dieser Erfahrung heraus entstehen Werneburgs Schatullen-Arbeiten. Und diese Erfahrung wird
auch möglich in der Rezeption.
Exemplarisch in ihrer Anschaulichkeit und Deutlichkeit: die Reiseschatullen voller Miniatur-Fundstücke. Fertiggestellt (2015) sind sieben: Berlin, Goa, Lissabon, Korfu, Marokko, Paris, Venedig; vielleicht entsteht in New York eine achte. – Die Ausstellungsauswahl: Berlin, Goa, Paris. – Jede Schatulle ist erstens eingebettet in eine gefundene länderspezifische Plastiktüte.
Beigelegt ist zweitens ein Heftchen mit Kurzinfos zu Fundorten etc. Sämtliches Material ist secondhand.
Aufschlussreich ist, worum es sich hier nicht handelt: Die Fundstücke sind nicht kunstkonventionell aufbereitet; nicht aufgewertet durch gestalterische Einbindung in einen neuen, sinnstiftenden Kontext – etwa eine Montage, eine Installation, eine Skulptur. Sondern sie bleiben ›sie selbst‹: Fundstücke – mit einem Zuhause in ihrer Schatulle. Von Reisen, von Orten der Welt wird hier berichtet durch Präsenz der Dinge und ihre ästhetische Erfahrbarkeit.

‘Space between Skin and Earth’
Erde und Haut.
Welche Auswirkungen hat das Element Erde auf das Wohlbefinden des menschlichen Körpers? Welcher innerer, sehr persönlicher Prozess wird dadurch ausgelöst und bewusst durchlebt?
Eine junge Frau und ein älterer Mann mit spastischer Lähmung gehen dieser Frage in einer Performance nach. Was bringt die Erforschung des anderen Körpers über das Element Erde mit sich, und inwiefern verändert sich der Seinezustand der Performer durch diese Fusion?

Imagine, X says to Y: ‘You are F.’ Y responds: ‘Yes, I’m F.’ Obviously, X and Y are in agreement about who is F. A philosopher might express this point in the following way: You are ‘you’ to me; and I am ‘you’ to you. The question of this paper is: Can I be ‘you’ to me? My answer is: No. – It might be replied, nothing is easier: fix your gaze in the mirror and say the words, ‘Hey, you!’ But my question is whether in doing such things I stand to myself in the very same kind of relation I stand in to you in address. ……… Recently, it has been suggested that the rendering is needed to make sense of the very idea of morality. Say, X demands of Y: ‘You must Φ!’ And let the ‘must’ express the force of the relevant kind of deontic necessity. In this case, the following is said to hold: Y’s response, ‘You are right, I must Φ’, is only sincere if Y adopts the very perspective from which X spoke and makes the demand on herself – that is, if she, as it were, thinks to herself, ‘You must Φ!’ or ‘Φ!’ And her having the capacity to do so is supposed to be the condition of her being subject to this kind of necessity…………

The Making of a Generation
SOMA Art Gallery presents the Making of a Generation by Maria Uroos. Utilizing interactivity, visual communication, prints, video projection, and a site-specific installation, this exhibition addresses the refugee crisis that has been unfolding in Syria and many other countries in the world. More people than ever are facing major humanitarian crisis – over 125 million people are displaced and have fled their homes as a result of war conflicts and persecution.
She felt the need to create a visual dialogue about the changes in life, culture, and religion that she saw post 9/11. Her tools include text and image, metaphors and analogies, elements and principles. All convey thoughts about the region where she lived, fleshed out into a form that is meant to extend conversations. Each piece begins with her.
Maria Uroos (b. 1984) is a Pakistani-born, New York City-based graphic designer. She studied Communications Design at Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute and holds an MA in Art History and Museum Studies from the City College of New York. Her work incorporates graphic elements of vernacular media, such as hand-written typography and collage, to examine representations of ownership and authenticity. Using, traditional art forms, and digital media, Uroos presents intriguing and thought provoking narratives that explore the historical vicissitudes of cultural identity and shed light on the human condition in a war torn society. She also works with various digital models, including 3D printing and motion graphics, to engage with contemporary issues of displacement, forced migration, and basic human rights issues.
Uroos’s work has been exhibited in the JH Arts Festival, Art Gotham, and Crest Art Fest, as well as at the West Side Gallery, Pratt Institute Gallery, Open Gallery Space, Musée Le Livre et la Lettre, and Hotel Arbez Franco-Suisse. She recently curated Design + Architecture = Art; and Hang Together: Collaborative Work & Practices.
When an Artist becomes a Terrorist
SOMA Art Gallery presents a special screening of a collection of performance documentations and media works by Al Fadhil, in addition to showing ‘Words in freedom’, ‘Cairo’s Diary’, there will be an open artist talk with Miriam Kurz (MA, Islamic Studies) who is currently a PhD-Candidate at the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies at Freie Universität Berlin. In her dissertation project she works on Muslim masculinities and questions of identity construction and gender relations among young Muslims in Berlin.
Al Fadhil was born in Iraq in November, 1954, but his birthday was officially registered as 1st January, 1955. He attended the Institute of Arts in Baghdad, from which he graduated in 1977.
After completing his studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, he began to practice as an artist at the beginning of the eighties. From the beginning of the nineties, he has been drawn towards social, political and economic themes, in the spirit of a new awareness of the communicative and political force of art.
His research, developed through activities, projects and works, all opened to debate, in the direction of a ‘visual and textual testimony’, that leads the spectator towards a reflective state in which he also becomes participator, guided by points of reference that range from the artist’s private life and his cosmopolitan existence, to problems relating to his land of origin, to its social emergence, and the overriding sense of its impermanence.
Al Fadhil’s work is characterized by the use of diverse media; he moves freely from the production of pictures and concrete objects, to installations, photographs, readings, video, and performance.
